We visited the Museum of German History. The drawing shows the devil sitting on a letter of indulgence and holding an indulgence cash box. This relates to our Martin Luther reading of the "95 Theses" and his opposition to indulgences. The image of the book is actually chronicles of family portraits during the Baroque era which relates to topics in our class as well; such as the lecture we had by a guest Professor.
The indents in the first photo are where the cement blocks are above ground. The exhibit captured what life was like for a Jew during WWII. I learned on our walking tour that the metal squares are in memory of a Jew who lost their life. Even though it was raining throughout our walking tour I found it very educational and interesting.
We got to walk around and go inside an old church that was damaged during the war. You can see the damage and cracks through the mosiac ceiling. Also, visited the DDR Museum which was very interesting. It was about life on the east side of the Berlin Wall. I have posted a few pictures of things I would not have learned in a classroom. The images above are from the DDR Museum. The picture with the children in the background is meant to show how kids at daycare had to go to the bathroom at the same time and had to wait until everyone was done until they were dismissed. The photo with the books showed how the East took away the privilege of reading certain books.
This was one of my favorite excursions of the maymester! There was a market going on while we were exploring the city. We got some tasty strawberries! The main goal of our excursion was to visit the Karl Marx house! This was a great break from our days in Otzenhausen. We toured a Jewish Synagogue. Our guide was amazing and I learned a lot about Judaism. After our tour, we got to adventure around Saarbrucken for the rest of the afternoon. We found a cute little restaurant with outstanding currywurst! |
