We visited a ironworks factory in Völklingen! It was outstanding and incredible. Everything at the factory has not been moved or changed since the factory was in use. This abandoned factory would be perfect for a haunted house. After going to Luxembourg we rode the bus over to Verdun. Here we went to an outstanding World War I museum and visited the Douaumont ossuary, a memorial cemetery for those who fought in the Battle of Verdun. From Otzenhausen we traveled by bus to Luxembourg and then to Verdun, France. In Luxembourg, we learned about the Schengen Agreement of 1985 which was a treaty that allowed for the Schengen area to be borderless. The agreement has become a topic of debate recently with the growing number of migrants. The picture of all of the flags represent all of the countries that belong to the agreement. After touring the Ludwigskirche, we adventured the rest of the afternoon through the city of Saarbrucken. There was an area downtown filled with shops and cafes that we frolicked in before taking a walk along the river.Ludwigskirche is a famous Protestant Baroque church. It was bombed during the second world war and was rebuilt. The interior was incredible and every inch of the church was built with the meaning to symbolize something. A unique aspect of the church was that the organ was in the front instead of the bak. This allowed for a special room in the back of the church which was specially made for the Prince. |
